Does a small company need a tax ID number?

A sole proprietor who does not have any employees and who does not file any excise or pension plan tax returns is the only business person who does not need an employer identification number (EIN). In this instance, the sole proprietor uses his or her social security number as the taxpayer identification number.

You can obtain an EIN in several ways:
  1. Online by clicking on the EIN link at www.irs.gov/businesses/small. The EIN is issued immediately once the application information is validated.
  2. By telephone at 1-800-829-4933 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. in your local time zone.
  3. By mailing or faxing Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number.
