Along with backing up critical files (IT Corner January 2005) some simple maintenance routines can keep your computer running smoothly.
- Defrag your hard drive. Windows includes a defragmenter (just go to Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter). When you save a file to your hard drive it doesn’t always get saved in one place. Because of the way the drive works the file may be broken up and stored in pieces. This results in long waits as the computer finds all the parts when you need the file the next time. You should defrag every 2 to 3 months.
- Run Disk Clean up. No matter how much space your hard drive has, you will soon wish you had more space. Disk Cleanup can free up additional space by emptying the Windows Recycle Bin and deleting the many temporary files created by various Windows applications, your Web browser, and old compressed files. You’ll also find Disk Cleanup in the Accessories group then System Tools.
