NPI Implementation: May 23, 2007

PREFERRED is actively collecting NPI and Taxonomy Code data from our providers for submission to contracted Healthplans and PPOs in order to save you time and effort…and to avoid claim denials!

The effective date to begin using the NPI is 5/23/07. Are you ready?

If you have not yet applied, go to the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) website at www.nppes.cms.hhs.gov. Looking for additional clarification? The Medlearn Matters issued by CMS in January 2006 gives a general outline of NPI usage and requirements.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that it is implementing a contingency plan for covered entities (other than small health plans) who will not meet the May 23, 2007, deadline for compliance with the National Provider Identifier (NPI) regulations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.

For more information visit CMS.HHS.gov. A quick link to (NPI) Compliance Contingency Guidelines is currently posted under the CMS HIGHLIGHTS section.
