CMS Offers Guidance on HIPAA Security Rule

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services ( CMS ) recently released the first in a new series of papers providing guidance on the HIPAA Security Rule. The first paper, "Security 101 for Covered Entities," provides an overview of the Security Rule and its intersection with the HIPAA Privacy Rule. The series will contain seven papers, each focused on a specific topic related to the Security Rule and designed to give HIPAA covered entities insight and assistance with implementation of the security standards. The series aims to explain specific requirements, the thought process behind those requirements, and possible ways to address the provisions. Topics planned for future papers include administrative, physical and technical safeguards; organizational policies and procedures and documentation requirements; the basics of risk analysis and risk management; and implementation for the small provider.
